Saturday, Apr. 15, 2006 ; Laconia eyes N.Y. bike event; By PAULA TRACY; Union Leader Staff;Laconia With Laconias Bike Week set for June 10-18, city councilors are going on a road trip to Americade, a touring motorcycle rally in Lake George, N.Y., to see what they can learn. Ward 5 City Councilor Bob Hamel had the idea and will be riding to the event on his 2003 Honda GoldWING alongside Brad Fitzgerald, a new city councilor whose Ward 1 includes much of Weirs Beach. The other councilors will go in their cars. Where Laconia pulls in hundreds of thousands mostly on Harley-Davidsons, Lake George attracts a quieter touring crowd. In fact, the Web site for Americade states this rally is not a place for shows of speed, hostile attitudes or illegally loud motorcycles. Laconia Bike Weeks Web site lists as events loud pipes contests, tattoo and bikini contests, Blue Oyster Cult and Quiet Riot concerts. The Laconia councilors plan to visit vendors to find out what they pay for space, meet government leaders and learn about revenue and how the town uses 200 volunteers each year for the five-day event. Motivating the road trip, said City Manager Eileen Cabanel, is Bike Weeks cost. Hosting the nations third largest bike rally in Weirs Beach runs nearly $200,000 a year. As fixed costs for salaries and insurance go up and the revenue remains constant, Cabanel said, it is harder to make ends meet. But Lake George seems to do it well. It has a daily gate fee. Laconia does not. Its a small town with a big influx of traffic, Cabanel said. Were going to learn from them how they do it. Lake George Village has been working with a single vendor and promoter since 1983. The event attracts an estimated 50,000 over a five-day period in early June. This year, it is June 5-10. Laconias Bike Week begins when Americade ends. The primary method for Laconia to recoup costs is through vendor permits. As many as 400 vendors could come this year to sell everything from T-shirts to Slurpies to chrome pipes. Each vendor is charged $450 for the nine-day permit. Cabanel said the city has traditionally charged $100 for a second or third vending site and now the city is looking at charging full price per subsequent site per vendor. The road trip will give the council a glimpse of the New York approach, Cabanel said, and it will also perhaps generate new ideas on how to make Laconia Bike Week better for 2007.
